January '15 William Thackeray

Happy 2015!

Here are our options for this month! I am just starting Vanity Fair... really looking forward to getting more into it.

William Makepeace Thackeray

Pendennis
Henry Esmond
Vanity Fair
The Virginians

PS- above is a snapshot of the German Christmas Market (all the red roofs), and the Edinburgh Castle from 287 steps up the Walter Scott Monument! I'll bring out a picture of the monument when we read him in August;) Not that you couldn't just look it up or something....

Have a good day wherever you are!

  1. I've gotten ahead of myself again...I finished reading Henry Esmond last night and it's only January 7!!! It was a pretty good book but I found it a bit hard to keep track of the different characters because the narrator had so many ways to refer to each one. All in all, I'm glad to have read it because I've never read any of Thackery's books before and it's broadened my horizons a bit..

  2. I am reading Vanity Fair and loving it so far! It is quite a hefty novel, so hopefully I don't fall to far behind and can finish it in it's respective month.

  3. Mom- you are such a keener! ;) I am finding Vanity Fair to be a little time consuming to read because so much of the content is referring to an event or person well known to Thackeray's audience when he wrote the novel, but not so much to me! I keep a bookmark at the back of the book also so I can quickly access the corresponding footnotes as is read.

  4. I have no footnotes for Vanity Fair and am in chapter 24. Umm. It is known as "The Novel Without a Hero", which is proving rather accurate - almost! That's as close to a spoiler as I'll give you. I will look up the synopsis of the other books and pick the one that looks most appealing. I can tell you I couldn't cover 4 Thackeray books in a month, unless it was a month long cruise or something - no cooking, no housework, no work! :)

  5. I'm on chapter 18 now... I read a lot today!! I am looking forward to chapter 24😀 thankfully it will be a year before we read another Thackeray novel (according to the book club plan anyhow). I am ready for a shorter book next month! I'd like to hear what you find out, Naomi (regarding his other books).

  6. I am on chapter XLIV - whatever that is in English! page 480 out of 754.....on the home stretch! Can't help wondering how it will all turn out, even for the more dreadful characters. As for the other books, Shanna - hahahahahahah...not any time soon. Maybe next January. :)

  8. Well, I finished it, and I must say that I could hardly put it down in the last third of the book. Glad I waded through those first few chapters. I can't wait to talk to you about your thoughts, but I don't want to spoil anything, so will keep my mouth shut. :) I will say that the author often causes me to reflect on my own inner workings and thoughts. We all have a human nature!
